work and play do not contradict each other; in fact, they complement each other. as the saying goes, "all work and no play makes jack a dull boy." a life burdened with work leads you nowhere, for you would get tired and bored with your daily routine work. on the other hand, proper recreation will relieve the tension and discomfort of our monotonous life because it offers you various ways to let out your pent-up emotions.
what i usually do to relax after school is jogging and seeing movies. usually i don#39;t spare time for exercise, but i value the physical education class at school. jogging several rounds in the field certainly relieves the day#39;s pressure. on weekends, i#39;ll catch the morning movie for my visual enjoyment. i feel revived and energetic for another week#39;s work-load.

in my opinion, the schoolwork now being assigned to high school students is too heavy. while it is true that students need to study, they need other things as well if they are to grow into healthy and well-rounded adults. high should be allowed more time for play. playing is not wasting time, as some think. it gives them physical exercise, and also exercise their imagination. which tends to be stifled by too much study. finally, the pressure put on high school students by excessive schoolwork can cause serious stress, which is unhealthy physically and mentally. i do not advocate the elimination of schoolwork. i do think, however, that a reduction of the current heavy load would be beneficial to students and to the society as a whole.

when i saw the titile of this essay i am supposed to be writing about, alli felt were its broadness and abstractness. though i am a chinese myself, it hadalways seemed complicated to tell how much exactly my nationality meant to meuntil that unforgettable experience in the chinese embassy at the u.k, whichmade a significant difference to my life. only when i was abroad did i realizehow proud i always was for my great country and clarify the relationship betweenchina and me, referring it to that between a mother and a child desperate forhelp.
it was in the london heathrow international airport that our passports andairplane tickets were stolen a few minutes before the plane took off. despairedand tired as we were, we wandered on the flourishing streets of london and feltisolated from all the nearby lighthearted laughters. it didnt take a long timefor the lingering homesickness hit us and reminded us of the chinese embassy atthe u.k that might be our sheet anchor. ages passed while we walked to theembassy, suffering from hunger and helplessness with every step we took. sureenough, our eyes were unconsciously filled with tears when we finally reachedthe spot. i was taken by surprise when the brightly-colored chinese nationalflag broke through the darkness and appeared once again in front of my eyes, recalling all the pleasure i had at home. it suddenly felt as if i was takenhome, a home where all my fear and anxiety vanished and replaced by the hope andwarmth that ran all over my body to cheer me up. the ambassadors were allamiable chinese officers and the familiar chinese accent drew me closer to mymotherland where we received the only help. the ambassadors made us noodles inthe familiar chinese way and settled the accommodation for us. i had tearsrunning down my cheeks when the hot noodles, smelled as pleasant as my mothersat home, filled my stiff empty stomach because i knew i was safe in the arms ofmy compatriots and there was no need to be worried anymore for i knew i washome.
we successfully returned to beijing the next day and i still couldnt forgetthe moment when i felt so much closer to my motherland than any other timegiven, as though our hearts were beating in one melody. had my motherland notsaved the day, we would never came back home so quickly without any restriction.for that one brief second when i was handed the brand new passport with achinese flag printed on it, my heart was overflowed with the pride for my ownnation because never has a country i known connected to its people so close asthe way my motherland and us related. i was like a child, crying and desperatefor help while my mother china is the harbor to hold me, this small vulnerableboat. even though i was out of home, my motherland remained inseparated from meno matter how far i go and is always there to help me back on track whenever inneed. i wish you a happy birthday, china. i am so proud of you not only becauseof your obvious amazing pace in economical development, but also due to therelieved and warm way i felt when i was abroad and enjoyed your ray of loveshone on my body and heart. you are the spirits dancing in my blood, thestrength holding up my body and and essence making up my soul. i am so honoredas a chinese, a member of this dynamic and loving country. for your developmentand future, it is my responsibility to settle you safely through all thenumerous difficulties until we finally make it to the bank where happinese andprosperity is waiting. i love you, china, my dearest mother!
it is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. but i believe that success is not external. i believe that success comes from within. my definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true to others. that means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the face of adversity. i also believe that success is not discriminatory. success is not restricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any person irrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. a good example of success is that of beethoven. he is one of the world's most famous composers, yet he was deaf. he could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created. yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals''that of composing music.
to exemplify what success means to me, i pose a question to all of you. what brings us together here today? i believe that it is the beauty of the spoken word. the effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to the spoken word. i believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for those who have difficulty in expressing themselves. these people are reclusive and had their emotions hidden within them. i once went to australia and i saw two pictures, once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child with social inhibitions. the picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain. the other was life'like, full of details and imagination. what this shows is that these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in these children.
my ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words to these children. these children have been neglected, but i feel that i can and should help these children to find themselves and be able to express themselves.
i realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles on the way. but i believe in my ideals and i will stick to them''even in the face of adversity. we should never have a premature abortion of ideals'let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge. for a life without ideals is not living.
thank you!
whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. in the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.
an individual human existence should be like a river—small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.
youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. nobody grows old merely by a number of years. we grow old by deserting our ideals.
years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

honorable judges, fellow students: recently, ther is a heated debate in our society. the college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive exceptional education at extraordinary places. but will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? will we be able to better the lives of others? will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?
the cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. but the cynics are wrong. the college students i see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. we help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.
the cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. but again, the cynics are wrong. we care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth. last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.
as college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. we all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. i believe in all my fellow classmates. though we are still inexperienced and even a little bit childish. i believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. we are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. i believe in our future.
